What's the difference between a linear drain and a standard center drain?

A linear drain runs along one edge of the shower instead of sitting in the middle, which allows for a single-slope floor (sloped in one direction only) instead of a four-way slope. This makes tile cutting easier, creates a more modern look, and is a popular choice for curbless and walk-in showers.

Will a linear drain smell or trap odors?

No, as long as it's installed correctly. Like any drain, it needs a proper P-trap in the plumbing beneath it to hold water and block sewer gas. The drain itself won't cause odor issues – that comes down to the trap and venting in your plumbing setup.

Can this be installed in a retrofit or existing shower, not just new construction?

Yes – as long as the existing plumbing has a 2" outlet. The main thing to check is depth: linear drains sit deeper than standard center drains, so there needs to be enough clearance beneath your shower floor for the drain body. We recommend having a plumber confirm your rough-in depth (the distance from the subfloor to the center of the waste pipe) before you order.
